Dear Mr. Frantz,
Hello, I’m Crystal Wang, the ex-president of the Musical Association of Peking University. I am very appreciated to be invited to 42nd Street on 17th Sept. in Shanghai and very lucky to get the hat with 42nd Street logo from you. I enjoyed the show very much at that time, and in return, I’m very honored to invite you to our show, Rent, in 8th Dec. on Beijing.
The show is presented by the students in the Musical Association of Peking University, which is one of the few non-professional student associations which can give a full musical show in China. We’ve done a lot to introduce musicals to students in Beijing. In June, we’ve presented Avenue Q in the campus, with all handmade puppets and scenes. The entire hall got crazy after the show. We got actors, we got bands, we got audience, but unfortunately, we did not get copyright. Under Chinese copyright law, performances without copyright are considered legally if actors are volunteers and no entrance fee required for the audience, versus definitely illegally in U.S. Avenue Q, as well as Rent, is performed under this statute. Though it was an advantage for us, we still remember there is no business like show business. We wish to get copyright, but it is very inconvenient for us in China to get access to the copyright center, like MTI. We hope that we can cooperate with Nederlander in the future, to get the copyright and bring more shows to the campus. I think it’s a really good and cheap way to advertise and introduce musicals to the future audience.
Although we are a student association, we’ve tried a lot with musical shows, and some of our members are very interested in the stage. They like acting, singing and dancing. I know that Nederlander has made much effort in importing Broadway musicals, and I’m still interested to know if Nederlander has any plan of making Chinese version of Broadway musicals, or hold workshops for local actors. We are always prepared to receive training for musical, and hope we can have more interactive communion in the future.
We are looking forward to your attendance this Saturday for Rent, and we will do our best to show you the passion of musical in the universities in China.
Best regards,
Crystal Wang, on behalf of Musical Association of Peking University

Tony
